How to convert Google Maps routes to GPX
This guide explains the basic workflow for turning a Google Maps directions link into a GPX file for cycling computers.
1. Create a route in Google Maps
Open Google Maps, choose Directions, and set your start, destination, and any stops. For cycling use, pick a route that you would realistically ride and check road conditions before exporting.
2. Copy the route URL
Use the share option in Google Maps or copy the browser URL after the route is visible. Short links such as maps.app.goo.gl and full /maps/dir/ URLs are supported when they contain a directions route.
3. Generate and download GPX
Paste the URL into Maps to GPX, choose Track or Route output, keep turn-by-turn cues enabled if you want navigation prompts, and download the GPX file.
4. Import into your cycling workflow
Import the GPX into Garmin Connect, Wahoo ELEMNT, Bryton Active, or another route management app supported by your device.
