Google Maps to Bryton GPX for Cycling

Convert a Google Maps cycling route URL into a GPX file you can review before adding it to Bryton Active or your usual Bryton route workflow.

Maps to GPX is free to use without an account and shows the route distance, point count, and available turn cues before download.

How to import the GPX into a Bryton Rider

  1. Download the GPX from Maps to GPX on your phone.
  2. Open the Bryton Active app, go to Course, and choose Import to select the GPX file. You can also open the file from your phone's share menu and choose Bryton Active.
  3. Connect the Rider to the app over Bluetooth and send the course to the device.
  4. On the Rider, open Course, select the route, and start navigation.

Without the app: connect the Rider by USB and copy the GPX into the ExtraFiles folder. Supported models list the file under Course after a restart.

How Bryton devices treat a Route GPX vs a Track GPX

A Bryton Rider generally follows the line it is given, whether that line comes from a Route or a Track GPX. Turn-prompt support on top of that line depends heavily on the model: newer Riders with turn-by-turn navigation can read cue points and alert you before a turn, while older or entry-level models mainly show the line with no prompts.

Check your specific Rider model's cue support before relying on it, since Bryton's own manuals describe this differently across the Rider 15/450/750/860/860 series and current models.

Turn-by-turn cues on a Bryton Rider

When TBT is enabled during conversion, Maps to GPX adds cue points built from Google's per-step navigation instructions alongside the Route or Track line. Bryton Active can pass these along when it sends the course to the device, but whether the Rider itself surfaces them as on-screen turn alerts depends on the model and firmware version.

Common problems and fixes

Route too long or slow to import: enable point simplification (keeps every other point) and regenerate before importing again.

No turn cues on the Rider: confirm the result screen showed a cue count above 0 before download, use Route with TBT enabled, and check whether your specific model supports on-device cue prompts at all.

The line does not match Google Maps: this usually means the area had no cycling data, so the conversion used driving mode as a fallback. Compare the distance shown in Maps to GPX with the Google Maps estimate.

Worked example: Tokyo Station to Tokyo Tower

Converting this route in bicycle mode produces a 4.4 km route with 78 route points and 18 TBT cues. On a model that supports cue prompts, expect a similar count after import — a route that comes back with 0 cues means the source directions returned no usable navigation instructions.

FAQ

Does every Bryton Rider show turn-by-turn cues from a GPX?
No. Cue support depends on the model and firmware. Some Riders show on-screen turn alerts from imported cue points, while others only follow the line. Check your model's manual or test a short course before a long ride.
Should I use Route or Track for Bryton?
Use Route with TBT enabled if your model supports turn cues and you want prompts. Use Track when a stable line is all you need. Bryton devices generally follow the line the same way regardless of format.
My route is too large to import quickly. What now?
Regenerate the GPX with point simplification enabled, which keeps every other point and roughly halves the file size, then import the smaller file through Bryton Active.
Why does the Bryton route differ from the Google Maps route?
Maps to GPX recomputes the route through Google's Routes API in bicycle mode, falling back to driving mode where cycling data is unavailable. Bryton Active or the Rider itself can also reinterpret the line, so check the full route before riding.
Why is the TBT cue count 0 even though I enabled TBT?
Cues are only added when Google returns per-step navigation instructions for the route. A route without cycling data in that area, or a very short or simple route, can return no usable instructions.
